ironing shirts?

why is it that spraying water over my shirt before ironing makes the result smoother ?

    when the shirt is dry, the threads are hard to straighten...

    they are already straightened by the sun or whatever that dried the shirt...

    But when u sprinkle water on them..they are wet again and hence its easy to 'dry' them straight!!! (ironing in other words)

    Because the water causes the threads to relax and be more pliable.
