What exactly does it mean when a horse is "spent"?

I think it was a Black Beauty movie I saw where one of the horse characters was raced without conditioning, and at the end of the race, she was totally spent and not good for racing anymore, or anything other than pulling a cart around. What does it mean when a horse is "spent" exactly? What physiological changes have happened?

Black Beauty was my favorite book. Second to last paragraph always made me tear up, "I have now lived in this happy place a whole year." *le sigh* So bitter sweet.

Anyways, at the end of the race Ginger had "broken her wind" and she was basically ruined. Her breathing during heavy exercise would never be sufficient or regulated like it should be by her own lungs. I do not know if this problem is treatable with modern meds. I don't know too much about Broken Wind, but I know it's similar to asthma.

Being "spent" means tired out with nothing left to give. Even race horses have something left to give after a race so to "spend" a horse isn't right. Even long distance competitiors like Endurance have to abide by strick standards making sure their horses heart rates are below a certain level even after a long ride.

Horses are amazingly strong, however they're amazingly fragile animals.

These are all issues that are meaningless when it comes to making America a better country. And, Republicans and Democrats all know that these are not real issues - they are fictional "controversies" manufactured to keep low-IQ Republicans involved in politics. Smart Republicans know that these are "dead horses." Solyndra: represented a fraction of a percentage of fund distributed in this program. It could not compete against subsidized Chinese parts. Other programs/companies have done very well Fast and Furious: If the US had stronger gun laws, the smugglers could have been charged. But, none of the smugglers actually broke a law, so they could not be arrested. The smuggling was taking place, whether or not the US followed the individuals involved, and could not legally be stopped. If you don't like it, help reverse NRA gun laws. Benghazi: Information was gathered over a period of a week. Thus, at any given moment, any given government official could only speak on the basis of the information he or she was given. It became clear within a few weeks that it was a tragedy - nothing more, nothing less. Obama lies no more than any other president. He has not obstructed justice. Some Republicans would rather stop Obama from fixing the country than let him succeed. It sounds like you are one of them.

When the horse is over used and it doesn't want to give it's spirit or heart into the activity it used to like, THEN it's spent.

I feel so sorry for horses like that, it's not their fault they became like that. Humans made them so.

Also if they are injured, tired, and getting slightly older it sometimes is called spent.

When a horse is spent, it means the horse is as useful as a pair of sunglasses on a bloke with only one ear.

    Hope this helps!
