Olivia
Hi! My name's Olivia and I'm a 19 year old nursing student from Portland, Oregon.
Writing the structural formula of an alkane from its IUPAC name.?
I'm pretty good at naming alkanes when given the structural formula. I understand how C5H12 is pentane and that CH4 is methane, but am having trouble writing the structural formula when I'm given the IUPAC name of the alkane. Even in class, there seem to be a lot of H2 and H3 thrown around and I don't know where they're coming from.
Example: Propane. Based on the prefix, I know that there will be a carbon chain of 3, but how do I know how many hydrogens to attach and where? Is there information I'm overlooking that tells me what I need to do or is it one of those ugly things I just need to memorize?
Thanks for the help in advance!
2 AnswersChemistry9 years agoHow do you write the formula for the conjugate base of an acid?
"Write the formula of the base for each of the following acids."
HCO_3^-
What are the steps to writing bicarbonate's formula? Any helpful hints I can use when I look back at the other acids listed? Thank you! :)
2 AnswersChemistry9 years agoStraight line equations.... Perpendicular lines?
As a part of my homework, I'm being asked to sketch a graph with the equation Y=(3/4)X-1 and a line perpendicular to it that crosses through the point (6,4).
In order to draw the perpendicular line, would I merely turn the (3/4) into (4/3) and then fill out my data starting with point (6,4) or do I need to change the vertical intercept also?
2 AnswersMathematics10 years agoCan I Enlist in the National Guard with...?
Here's a little background information. I had a recruiter who was able to get me into MEPS and I passed my physical and ASVAB with an overall score of 60. My education put things on hold and have since fallen out of touch with him
I am hoping to enlist in the (Oregon) Army National Guard this fall, but I have been halted in the process previously because I hold a GED. If all goes as planned I should have 17 college credits by August. Will those be enough to enlist with?
3 AnswersMilitary1 decade agoI'm waiting for day 2 at meps...?
I have my medical examination completed and they had me go back to the hotel to come back tomorrow for my job selection, contract signing, etc...
I have plenty of questions in mind, but what are some questions that you would ask regarding your choice of mos or your contract?
5 AnswersMilitary1 decade agoWhat Bank Do You Use?
I'm joining the army (reserve) and need to open a checking account here at home in Portland, Oregon with a bank that I'll be able to use any where in the country (east coast, southwest, etc...).
I'm currently looking into banks on my own, but am curious about what banks current service members are using. I really appreciate any input anyone gives me.
7 AnswersMilitary1 decade agoArmy MOS and Training Questions?
First Question:
I'm hoping to train as a 68D (I need to enlist as an 09B - unassigned trainee), operating room specialist and I'm curious about the differences between the job's duties in the field and duties in a stationary hospital (i.e. Walter Reed). The goarmy website talks about learning basic nursing skills, operating room upkeep, patient preparation, etc... but also mentions learning to be able to perform emergency surgery if a doctor is unavailable. I assume that is mainly for a field hospital. Could someone enlighten me with the differences?
Second Question:
After the preparatory school at Fort Jackson, being female will I most likely stay at Fort Jackson for BCT or is there a chance I'll be sent to Fort Leonard Wood?
My meps physical is scheduled for April 10th (I already took my asvab) and if all goes as planned (but it is the army... haha) I'm going to be shipped out on the next rotation of the prep school at Fort Jackson.
Thanks to everyone that answers, I really appreciate it! =)
3 AnswersMilitary1 decade agoActive Duty vs Reserve GI Benefits?
I'm enlisting in one week and cannot decided whether or not it would be better for my academics to join active or reserve. I'm planning on going to nursing school and in the future applying to OCS, if I find the military to my liking.
My recruiter gave me this pamphlet on the post 9/11 GI Bill, but only lists active duty.
I thought I wanted to join active, but my recruiter says that you won't get full benefits for three years, but with the reserves you'll get them right away. In the army reserve pamphlets, it says up to $4,500 a year and up to $20,000 in repayment plans.
Can someone please help me try to understand this?
2 AnswersMilitary1 decade agoArmy Preparatory School?
I'm getting ready to go for my GED and have recently heard about the army prep school. What is the average day like while attending it at Fort Jackson?
What are the odds of being accepted into it? I'm seventeen years old, last completed my junior year June 2008 and scored a 60 on the asvab.
1 AnswerMilitary1 decade agoPre-BCT Preparations?
In a few months I'll be going to basic and I'm currently working on my abdominal strength and have been running regularly, but am a little stumped for my arm strength (those push-ups are kicking my @$$).
Any ideas to help me improve my upper body strength with no access to a gym or weights?
7 AnswersMilitary1 decade agoWaiver needed for MOS?
I'm hoping to enlist in the army as a 68Wm6 and my recruiter said I was just two points short on my asvab test, but I could send in a request for a waiver. I do have other jobs in mind as back ups that I already qualify for, but this is my primary choice.
What are the odds of the waiver passing through?
8 AnswersMilitary1 decade agoiTunes v.8 help for Windows XP?
iTunes v.8 (which is required for my new ipod) will not install on my computer and I have ran all of these diagnostic checks and have upgraded up to service pack 3 and have uninstalled, reinstalled and even defraged my computer and it continues to post an error saying,
"The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed."
My computer is not running in safe mode and the only program that the installer isn't installed correctly for is itunes.
1 AnswerSoftware1 decade agoTroops Sent to Somalia?
"UNITED NATIONS -- The Bush administration will mount a last-ditch push this week to muster international backing for a relatively small U.N. peacekeeping mission in Somalia, in an effort to help stem piracy and prevent the resurgence of Islamist militants in the lawless East African nation, according to State Department officials..."

Do you think that U.S. troops will be sent to Somalia in the next few years? If so, do you think it will be a repeat of Operation Restore Hope from 92/93?
10 AnswersMilitary1 decade agoNavy - What is a homeport?
I'm from an army family and I'm not 100% clear on what a homeport is. Is it a naval port in just the United States or does it include ports in US military installations such as Japan?
Thank you!
4 AnswersMilitary1 decade agoCan the eyes be classified one color, but appear to be another?
My eyes are an odd mix of green/brown/blue and the color ratio shifts all the time. I received these eyes from my father and one day he was told at the Optometrist's that his eyes are blue. Here is where my question comes in, can the eyes be classified one color, but appear to be another?

3 AnswersBiology1 decade agoI need ideas for a hair cut. Help?
I have REALLY curly hair and soon I'm joining the army and will have it cut (my own decision). At the moment, I look a lot like if Jim Morrison and Laverne (of Laverne and Shirley) had a baby.
Since I'm joining the army, I don't want to have to pull it back (at least through my training), but it has to be neat looking on its own.
Any ideas for a short hair cut that still looks cute for a person with natural ringlets in their hair?
5 AnswersHair1 decade agoWhat are the quarters on post like for single privates?
I'm joining active duty and plan to live on post after AIT, but have no idea what it'll be like.
From what I can tell from the army website, there's a bedroom/living room area and a (possibly shared) kitchen.

5 AnswersSingles & Dating1 decade agoArmy regulation hair?
I'm enlisting in the army and I'm wondering about what I should do with my hair. I have long, thick, curly hair and now I usually wear it in a bun. However, it's not army regulation (it's messy and above the eyebrows).
Would it be easier to practice putting my hair in a neat bun (with my ultra-thick hair) or cutting it short? If short, what style?
I worry that in basic I will be unable to put it up within regulations before having to go to PT.
