How much math should a chemistry major actually take?
My degree technically only requires calculus I, but that seems like it's not nearly enough.
Also, how pertinent is discrete math to chemistry? I know math and physics majors that know nothing about computer science typically have a bad time in grad school/their jobs, but is it like that for chemistry too?
1 AnswerChemistry7 years agoWould this be a viable action plan for making a living off of music?
1. Finish my undergrad degrees in instrumental ed and saxophone performance.
2. Go to the best graduate school that I can and get either an MM or doctorate. I'm leaning towards being a jazz studies major right now, but if there are better options for a grad degree I'm all ears.
3. Try to get a position in one of the US Military bands. I'm pretty sure that I'm good enough to get into one of the fleet/reserve bands right now, but I'd really love to become a member of "The President's Own", or the equivalent for the other branches.
4. Teach private lessons.
5. Play as many gigs as I can.
6. Become a band director (if needed).
I'm only a second semester freshman right now, but I figured it'd probably be a good idea to make sure that my plan isn't faulty in any major way.
As a side question, is the doctorate worth it, or should I stop at an MM?

Both of them are known for being odd guys, but who is the more eccentric of the two?
1 AnswerClassical8 years agoCan anyone tell me what this picture is supposed to tell me?
http://i.imgur.com/TQUddrm.jpg?1
It looks like some sort of circle of fifths, but I have no idea what the circles, lines, or numbers mean. If it helps, this picture is from the front of this book. The book doesn't explain what it means.

For the record, I'm well aware of what I'm getting myself into.
2 AnswersClassical8 years ago2 Picardy third questions?
1. Why is it called a Picardy third? Was Picardy a person or place, or is it some other random reason.
2. Is there a term for the inverse of a Picardy third?
2 AnswersClassical8 years agoHow unrealistic would it be for me to make my college's orchestra after a year of clarinet?
Assuming that I practice my butt off for that entire year? It's a good music school, and the Orchestra tends to hover around 90 members. I also have a lot of experience on sax, and I have decent tone despite having no clarinet experience. Keep in mind that I'll have good equipment and a great teacher from day one.
If that's not a realistic time frame(which it probably isn't), what would be?
3 AnswersClassical8 years agoWhich of these two interpretations do you prefer?
Specifically 2:20-2:35 in the Delangle, and 2:30-2:42 in the Londeix. You can give an overall review of the two also if you want, but I'm mostly interested in that one phrase.

Here's the full score if you want to follow along. The part I'm really interested in is Rehearsal mark 8 on page 5.
1 AnswerClassical8 years agoVibrato and Projection?
Just to make sure I have this right, when you project more, you'll naturally get a more pronounced vibrato correct? Or am I way off base?
1 AnswerSinging8 years agoHow much money should I save up if I want to get a good bari mouthpiece?
I want to be able to afford pretty much anything that would strike my fancy.
Right now I'm thinking about $700 USD would be sufficient, but am I forgetting any notable brands that would run me more than that?
5 AnswersJazz8 years agoSome Walking Bass questions?
1. For the leading tone, is it generally better to use a true leading tone(half step away), a diatonic leading tone, or the 5th of next chord?
2. For the "filler" notes (notes between the root and the leading tone), would arpeggiating the chord or using a note from a scale related to the chord generally be better?

3 AnswersFantasy Sports9 years agoAre there times where you shouldn't use vibrato during a late Romantic Concerto?
Also, do you have any other stylistic tips for the period? I've been listening to the Dvorak and Schumann cello concertos lately, but I'm afraid I might be missing something obvious about the style.
I'm sure these questions are very basic, but I'm a saxophone player. I hardly ever play anything that isn't modernist or contemporary.
2 AnswersClassical9 years agoWhat is this orchestra tuned to?
A=442 like the comment says? I can tell it's sharper than A=440, but I can't tell exactly what it is
Adding link in a second, I really hate the link in question detail glitch :/
2 AnswersClassical9 years agoGood recordings of the Eccles Sonata in G Minor?
The music doesn't say what the opus is so I can't help in that regard. I'm going to play this for a youth orchestra audition in about 3 weeks on saxophone, so I'd like to hear some professional recordings to hopefully incorporate some of the musical ideas they do into my playing. Even though I'm playing it on saxophone I'd rather hear recordings of string players, they tend to know how to play baroque a lot better than sax players.
1 AnswerClassical9 years agoIs this etude in 3 or 2?
It's the technical piece for All Region/First Round All State. The fact that it's fast 6/8 makes me think it should be in two, but all of the rhythms in the piece would make a lote more sense if it was in 3.
Hopefully the picture is readable
