  • I have no expenses, how can I spend money to make money?

I'm doing a co-op engineering job that pays very well (about average North American salary), but I'm still a university student living with my parents. Because of this, I have no large expenses (bills, mortgage, etc). So, basically all that money will stay in my bank account.

I know this is a very lucky case, and apart from putting money in a savings account, what sort of things can I do to increase the yield of that money? A savings account can only go so far, and I know I need a long term plan.

I want to ensure future financial stability for myself, and if I can "invest" this money in one way or another, I will have much more of a backup for when I do have those large expenses.

Any advice or experience would be very appreciated! Thanks!

  • I'm stuck, which Android phone?

I've gone through a lot of reviews and lists of the best current Android phones, and whatnot.

First off, I don't want a galaxy. It doesn't matter how many nifty things it has, it's too cluttered and I just don't want it.

I've finalised my list down to either the Nexus 5 or the HTC one.

I have concerns with both phones, I like the Nexus because it's pure raw Android, but it might be too simple. I like the HTC because it's a great balance of everything (and good audio is a plus) but the UI doesn't seem very nice to me..

Anyway, tell me what your opinions are for your favourite Android phones!

  • New phone. iPhone 5s or Android?

I've been on the iPhone wagon for a 3 year contract, so I currently have the iPhone 4. Back when I got my iPhone, there were no Android phones that I liked, they all seemed laggy, clunky, and much less consistent and reliable. I like the iPhone because there is no room for error, everything is always smooth, well integrated and seamless.

However, I know times have changed and now there's competition.

Upgrading to the iPhone 5s would be huge for me, that's skipping over the 4s and the iPhone 5. It's a choice that wouldn't be risky, and I'd know exactly what I was getting.

But apparently Android (GS4?) has some pretty spiffy features, and is very very reliable too.

I like the idea of adopting android because I'm quite into Linux, and I'm studying computer science and computer engineering. Android seems like I could get it to work for me in my own unique ways.

I just don't know what I'm risking by switching.

    Please provide your opinions!

  • Error Analysis: What does X% + 1 digit mean?

I'm doing a physics lab course, and in the pre-lab, they ask a lot of error problems. This problem in particular says "the accuracy of a multimeter is cited as +/- 0.3% +/- 1 digit for the Amp scale"

Then with a calculated amperage of .425A, I can find 0.3% of it, but I have no idea what the +/- 1 digit means.

    Thanks for your help

  • How to make programs for ms-dos with c++?

    Before you answer:

I have DOS installed on a USB drive and can boot into it fully on my PC.

I have tried using DJGPP, TURBO C++ and WATCOM C/C++. These programs have never successfully installed on DOS. I have installed watcom successfully, but I can't run it.

QBASIC installs and runs fine on the USB drive, it is not an issue with the drive.

I would like to know - in as much detail as possible - how I can write c++ code (nothing with non standard libraries) and run it as a program in DOS.

A dos IDE would be nice, but at the very least I want to just run the programs in dos.

The reason for doing so, is because I like writing quick little programs to help me with school work (for example, I wrote one to track progress and assignments in a class). And I would like to run these programs without having to boot into my full OS first. DOS boots within 5 seconds and runs instantly.

    Thank you

  • Math permutations and Combinations help?

I need help understanding, conceptualizing and solving a combinations problem:

Consider a standard deck of 52 cards. How many 5-card hands can be formed that include exactly 2 pairs (example 2 Queens and 2 Kings and 1 other card)?

I understand most problems but I can't seem to grasp how to set this one up, thanks

  • How to get edit command in MS DOS?

I have DOS 6.something booting off a USB drive, but the edit command does not work.

I'm not talking about the command prompt, this is real MS-DOS.

It doesn't recognize the edit command, so I can't view text files or make them or anything, how do I install or configure the edit command?

    Thanks in advance.

  • MS-DOS USB boot can't access harddrive, how do I fix?

I used a program called rufus to prepare a USB stick to be bootable with MSDOS. I changed my boot order to make external drives first.

DOS boots wonderfully, except it thinks that the USB stick is the C drive. If I try to open any other drive, it says it's nonexistent.

So the entire computer is just the USB stick, and I can't access any of the files on my hard drive, not to mention run any cd's (old DOS games).

Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

  • Home server spec recommendations?

I'm going to build a relatively low-power home server. I would like your opinion on what kind of hardware I should put into it.

It will be running Windows Home Server 2012 database, as my university provides licensed copies to engineering students (me). It will serve storage/backup for 3 computers, have remote access capabilities from the internet, manage torrents and test code.

Also, I wanted it to connect to a few raspberry pi devices to, for instance, stream HD movies to TVs, stream audio to other divices, and other things.

There won't be many people using it at once, so I know the processor needn't be too strong, but I want room for the future and I want it to be reliable.

So what kind of specs would accommodate this? Any other tips or ideas for a first time server builder?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Ideas for building a computer?

    Hey,

I'm an engineering student, I'm taking a lot of computer science and electrical engineering classes. I would like to build a small desktop computer to run unix (or any OS).

Disregarding its power, I would like to know if there are any creative ideas to add to the computer. Any creative or unique hardware ideas, case ideas, or even just usage ideas. I don't want to just stick a processor and memory onto a motherboard, I want a special rig.

All ideas will be considered, thanks!

  • Why is the cube root not defined for negative numbers?

I'm in first year Calculus right now, and to all of my knowledge, you cannot square root a negative number, but you can by all means cube root a negative number.

    For example, √4 = 2, √-4 does not exist.

    But cube√27 = 9 and cube√-27 = -9, because -9*-9*-9 is -27.

This is mind, when I'm drawing a graph without the calculator, I assume domain is all real numbers. But when I check on the graphing calculator, it's only positive numbers.

    Why is this?

For reference, the function I'm trying to graph by hand is y = x - 3x^(1/3)

  • Moment of Inertia for an odd pivot point?

For my physics homework, I need to solve the moment of inertia of a rod pivoting about a point 1/4 of the way down the rod.

The rod weighs 0.205 kg, measures 1m in length, and is suspended by two strings: one .25 m down the rod and the other .75 m down the rod. As follows: https://www.smartphysics.com/Content/Media/Images/...

The right string is cut and I need to find the initial angular acceleration. I know the force is 1.01 N on the area attached to the string, therefore torque is 0.505 clockwise. Since torque = moment of inertia * angular acceleration, I need the moment of inertia at that pivot point.

Unless there's a better way of doing it! thanks!

  • Why can't I taste olive oil?

Everyone I speak to either loves or hates olives and olive oil. But only recently did I realise that the only reason I "enjoy" them is because it's basically tasteless and it adds a nice texture to food.

But it turns out people either love or hate it's taste and flavour... I've eaten olive oil by the spoonful (even downed a few shots of it) and it tastes like absolutely nothing to me.

I can get a faint essence of olive oil by really breathing while I eat it, but I wouldn't classify that as a taste or flavour.

I can taste green olives, I do taste their flavour (at least what I think their flavour is) but black olives taste like nothing (albeit a little metallic).

My taste buds are fine with everything else, I find agreements with my friends on intensity of other foods in the sweet, salty, tart or tasteless categories. It's just olive oil and black olives that I cannot taste at all.

    why?

  • Physics, rotational dynamics, 3 round masses about a pulley.?

Hello, my physics professor does not instruct anything, teach anything in class. So we have this physics homework and I have no idea how to approach it.

Each question is based off of this situation:

An hoop with mass mh = 2.7 kg and radius Rh = 0.15 m hangs from a string that goes over a solid disk pulley with mass md = 2 kg and radius Rd = 0.08 m. The other end of the string is attached to a massless axel through the center of a sphere on a flat horizontal surface that rolls without slipping and has mass ms = 3.3 kg and radius Rs = 0.17 m. The system is released from rest.

What is the linear acceleration of the hoop?

I've calculated the moments of inertia of the pulley and the sphere to be pulley = 0.0064 and sphere = 0.038.

I don't know if this link works for you, but here's an image of the situation https://www.smartphysics.com/Content/Media/Images/...

How do I approach this problem? Please explain steps with some words. Thanks!

  • Calculus, relating rates with changing distance?

Hello, I seem to post a lot of calculus questions.

I need help on how to approach this 'related rates' problem in calculus. The problem is from Stewart Calculus Early Transcendentals 3.9 question 17.

"A man starts walking north at 4ft/s from a point P. Five minutes later a woman starts walking south at 5ft/s from a point 500ft east of P. At what rate are the people moving apart 15 minutes after the woman starts walking?"

*****************Below here is all my approach, you don't need to read it*******************

My approach was to create a triangle between them with hypotenuse x (representing the distance between them), leg C (representing the total north/south distance between them and P) and the horizontal leg (500 meters as the question says.)

    It looks like this: http://img607.imageshack.us/img607/7205/trianglev....

    Then a formula for C(t) where t is in minutes = 1200 + 540t

(1200 is the distance the man moves in the first 5 minutes, 540 is the change in C every minute)

    Therefore the formula for X is X(t) = √(500² + C²)

    Next I solved the derivative of X is (1/2)*(500² + C²)^(-½) * 540

(540 is the derivative of C)

Then plugging in for t = 15, since the function C is already in minutes, I get C = 9300, but plugging it into my derivative formula gives 0.029. That's incorrect, the answer is 8.99ft/s.

    Where did I go wrong?

    Thank you!

  • angular acceleration question?

Hi, I'm having trouble with angular acceleration. The problem goes that their is a ceiling fan that takes 3.1 seconds to reach full speed, and in that time it rotated 12 times.

If it helps, the fan's moment of inertia is 1.31 and it's radius is 0.24m.

I'm trying to find it's angular acceleration. Please show steps! Thanks!

  • Solving the derivative help!?

I'm stuck, there's a problem giving a formula for number of yeast cells in a dish at a certain time given:

    a/(1+be^(-0.7t))

I need to find a and b so the function satisfies this property: at time (t) = 0, the number of cells is 20 and the rate of change is 12.

I figured out a in terms of b by plugging in t=0 and solving for 20.

Now I need to differentiate the equation, make it equal to 12 and solve for b after pluging in (20+20b) for a.

Long story short I need the derivative of the function when t = 0.

  • How do I make a website where only one aspect of it changes from page to page?

I'd like to start a simple webcomic. each page of the site will be the exact same except for the comic in the middle of the page.

I want to save memory by only having one copy of the page. Clicking either the left or the right button will load the page again with a new comic depending on which arrow pressed. This could also be done by the URL of the page with a number corresponding to a comic.

This way, I can also update the site and have the update take place regardless of which comic is being viewed.

Most comics do this, like xkcd, three word phrase, cyanide and happiness etc..

I'm not too comfortable with HTML, but I know enough to see what's happening. I also have Microsoft expression studio from my university.

Any tips or links to tutorials would make me happy!
