  • How much money do I need to enter the UK on a working holiday permit?

Im travelling to the UK early next year for a working holiday. Im about to apply for a working holiday visa and Ive got an offer of a job over there.

But, I understand that I need to be able to show to the immigration officers on arrival that I have sufficient funds to support myself or buy a plane ticket home, should the job not work out, or something.

Could someone please tell me roughly how much money Ill need to be able to show them I have, to prove I have sufficient funds for entry?

    Many Thanks!

  • What services can I use Japan Rail Pass on?

    Hi.

Im going to Japan in August and Ive bought a Japan Rail Pass. Id just like to know what services I can use them on.

I know I can use it on all Shinkansen services EXCEPT for the Nozomi ones, but can I use it on the Japan Rail subway services for getting around the cities, or do I need to buy a ticket for those ones?

    Cheers!

  • UK Working Visa Question?

Next year, Im going to the UK for a working holiday. Obviously, while Im there, I want to travel around Europe and maybe Africa a little bit.

I understand that I can easily travel within the European Economic Area, but if I travel outside that zone, will I be able to return to the UK and work again, or will this mean that my visa is cancelled?

    Many Thanks!

  • What is the next step for reconciliation?

With the Australian parliment apologising for past injustices towards the indigeonous population today, what do you think is the next steps in bridging the gap between white and black in this country should be?

Im looking for practical, tangible solutions to the problem (such as policies the government could enact.) Not just rhetorical answers like: "They should all get jobs" or something equally as inane.

    Cheers!

  • Can you help interpret my dreams?

Yo. So Ive been having some really vivid dreams lately, which I think is great because Im pretty facinated by the work of Freud and the Surrealist art movement, so Im thrilled, and Id also like to learn a bit about what they mean, what part of my personality (if any) they reflect and the like.

The first dream Ive been having since I was about 8 years old is where I walk into this giant glass building. Inside it's really bright, and everything is made of glass or is white, except for a few plants (ferns) on the sides of the rooms. I walk around until I find a chair made out of glass in the middle of the room. I sit down on the chair (it looks like a throne) and that's when I wake up.

Ill post the other dream next.

  • Accomodation in Belize at December?

Im heading to Belize via Guatemala in December, and expect to be there either just before, or just after Xmas day. Im coming from Guat. by boat, and will be arriving in the southern area.

How hard will it be to find accomodation at this time? Im travelling on a budget and will be staying at pensions, hostel and guest houses. Will I be able to turn up and get a room, or do I need to book ahead?

    Many Thanks!

  • Any hassles re-entering the USA with a Cuban Visa Stamp in Passport?

    Hi!

Im travelling to Central America in December and would love to get over to Cuba. The only catch is that I am coming from Australia, and will have to get there and away via the USA & Mexico.

I will be travelling on an Australian passport, so if I have a Cuban visa stamp in my passport, is it likely that I will be hassled by US Immigration when I try to re-enter the country to fly home?

    Cheers!

  • What species of moth/butterfly do Spitfire Caterpillars belong to?

Hi. Tricky question because Im pretty sure these things only live in Australia, but, we'll see how we go:

Does anyone know them grubs that tend to live in big "swarms" generally near or on eucalyptus trees commonly called Spitfire Grubs or Spitfire Caterpillars?

They're called this because they are extremely agressive, and if threatened have an extremely painful sting.

Does anyone know if they are proper caterpillars that turn into moths/butterflys, OR are they from a different family all together? Does anyone have any more information on them that I could check out?

I realise this might be a tough question, given I havent provided much information, but Id be greatful for any help.

  • Is it still art?

Ok, so the other week I was at the Gallery in Melbourne seeing the Guggenhiem Collection Exhibition and came upon the piece by artist Dan Flavin, called: Untitled.

(You can see it here: http://www.ngv.vic.gov.au/guggenheim/index.html It's the first image on the right of screen as you scroll down)

As you can see, it's just a collection of neon tubes that he has arranged in rowes.

So now, just imagine one of the tubes burns out and gets replaced by one of the gallery staff. Is it still Dan's work? (Since he's now dead) Once all the bulbs get replaced by someone else, is it still art, or is it just a collection of lights, no more important than neon lights on a restaraunt window?

What makes this piece art? Is it because it looks pretty or something, or more so because of the IDEA that Dan was trying to put across to his audience?

  • What is your favourite lyric & why?

Is there a line in a song that just really does it for you? What is it and why do you like it? What do you think makes a great lyric? Is it the wordplay, or the imagery or does it have to be something you can relate to personally?

Note: Im not asking for a WHOLE song, just a couple of lines (the best ones) from that song.

The points go to the person with the best reasoning behind why they like a certain line.

So, a lot of questions on here about "punk rock" and the "punk sound", but I wonder how you guys define it. I know how I define it, and Ill post that up later, but how do you guys decide if a band is "punk" or "un-punk"?

Best answer that draws reference to current and previous punk trends gets 10 points.

  • Do you need a return ticket to get a visa for Guatamala or Belize?

    Hi There,

Im planning on travelling through Mexico, Guatamala & Belize in December.

Im going to fly into Guat. City and then travel overland back to Mexico City (via Belize) to fly home. I understand however that I might need a return ticket to be allowed into Guatamala & Belize though. Will they accept the fact that I have a ticket departing Mexico as evidence that I dont intend to stay forever? Or will it be a problem at all?

How do most airlines handle this issue? Will they let me on board without a return ticket?

    Many Thanks!

  • Is it necessary to book ahead in Mexico at Xmas for accomodation?

    Hi There,

Im heading to Mexico, from Australia this December for just over a month and I will be there during Christmas & New Year. Id prefer to not book my accomodation ahead, as this gives me more freedom to change my itinerary when Im there.

So, will it be possible to just get a room in a hostel or guesthouse when I arrive in town, or does everything book out early during this period?

I will most likely be doing: Mexico City, Taxco, Oaxaca, the Yucatan Peninsula and maybe going into Guatamala.

  • What paper work do I need for tourist entry into Thailand as an Australian citizen?

Im travelling to Thailand in October, and I understand that Australian citizens are exempt from visa's if they are there for tourism purposes and arent staying longer than 30 days. I fit both of these categories, so I just need to know what paper work I need to have with me. I already know I need a passport & return airline tickets, but do I need anything like additional photos, proof of funds etc. etc. etc.?

    Any info would be great.

  • Who are the most important bands of the 20th-21st Century?

Ok music lovers & assorted music trivia nerds, who do you think are the most important bands of the 20th and 21st first centuries?

Put down as many bands/artists as you like, but be sure to JUSTIFY why you put them down. For example: Dont just write: "The Beatles" and nothing else, give some justification.

The best list and justification gets the points.

  • How can I kill time on a layover in Kuala Lumpor?

    Hi There,

Im going to be flying into Kuala Lumpor airport in Malaysia soon, to catch a connecting flight. Unfortunately, the connection doesnt leave for another 5 hours after arrival, which means Im going to have to wait around the airport for this time.

Are there any layover hotels or lounges which charge a nominal by the hour fee where I can kill time, or anywhere more comfortable than the standard airport lounges to kill time, at this airport?

  • Vietnam for Xmas/New Year break. Is it worth it?

    Hi there,

Im planning a trip to Vietnam, flying into HCMC on Boxing Day (Dec. 26th) of this year, and have about 2 weeks in the country. I understand it's quite crowded at this time of the year. Is it worth booking a rigid itinerary now, to ensure I have accomodation and travel sorted for the whole trip when I arrive, or will I still be able to find transport & accomodation fairly easily when Im there?

Im planning on going along the coast from HCMC, then back down to the Mekong Delta.

    Cheers.
