  • Help in finding a story?

Basically, it goes something along the lines of, there's a building with lots of windows, each of a different color and different shape. People in the building see light through a certain window, and they all believe that the light that comes through their own window is the true nature of the light outside. They fight over which window is right, and no one ever actually decides to step outside.

I'd like to find a more eloquent version than what I can recall from memory, does anyone know what I'm talking about and have a link?

    Thanks

  • Pagans and non-religious on consoling Christian friends?

I have a close friend (Christian) whose mother recently became brain-dead due to oxygen deprivation related to heart problems. I want to be there for her, but I don't really know what to say... I can't say she's in my prayers b/c I don't pray, and even if I did, I don't think prayers to Eris would be as appreciated...

What do you say in such situations? I'm at a loss...

  • How much room should I allocate for an install of Windows XP?

When I reformat my computer in the near future, I plan on having a Windows partition and a Linux partition and a shared partition.

I plan on putting all my Windows applications on the shared partition, so all the Windows partition will need space for is the OS. About how much room should I partition for this?

And if you have experience with Linux as well, about how much space should I partition for it? The Linux partition will house the programs as well as the OS.

I plan on running Ubuntu 8 and Windows XP Media Center Edition, 2002, SP 2. My harddrive is 56 GB.

  • In American Beauty?

Does anyone know what the song is that's playing leading up to the almost sex scene with Kevin Spacey and Mena Suvari? It's not the score song, but before that. It's not on the soundtrack...

  • In Adobe Premiere...?

I have my video file (.avi using divx codec) and it will play the raw video in Premiere. But when I add it to the timeline it plays the audio but not the picture. Does anybody have any clue what the deal is?

And yes, I have the codec installed properly.

  • Windows XP Shell Replacements?

I posted this Early this morning and got no replies, maybe a more active time will give better results.

I'm looking to replace my explorer.exe for Windows XP, and have explored several shell replacements, including Aston and bblite. Aston was a trial version, and I'm looking for something free (preferably open source), and bblite is very minimalist, lacking a few features that I'm not happy giving up, (eg. the volume control buttons on my laptop) though otherwise very pleasurable to use.

Does anyone have any suggestions on a good replacement shell, or could someone point me towards a side-by-side comparison of a number of them?

I'm looking for lightweight but not to the point of being grotesque or severely lacking in functionality.

  • Religious Jewelry?

For those who wear some religious symbol in the form of jewelry, clothing, etc, I am curious as to why you do. Is it for attention, or to identify with others of your faith, or is it a matter of displaying it to the world? Or is it something totally different? I'd really like to know what you have to say on the subject.

For theists who don't wear any religious symbols, why not?

I'd like for you to think about it, don't just spit up an overused cliche answer.

  • The most interesting thing that none of us could do?

You know what would be quite possibly the most amazing opportunity ever? To gain access to the vaults under the Vatican... Who knows what all is hidden down there... It's sad that it'll never happen :' (

    Thoughts?

  • Dizziness and brief vision loss after standing up and stretching?

The other day after my calculus class, I stood up and streached. It was as usual, my vision went black and I got kinda dizzy, I guess from my blood rushing to my legs after their not being used in the past hour or so. But this time it lasted longer and kinda fell headfirst into the desk, just barely catching myself groping around in the dark reaching for something to break my fall. I was dizzier than usual and it felt like i was floating and could hardly control my body.

Is this something that I should be worried about?

  • Isn't it an insult to nature?

To trivialize the rise of modern life by attributing it to a few magic words spoken by a fictional creator?

People are saying that the results of a process that has taken nature billions of years (that's some number with NINE 0's attached) was done by Sky Daddy in seven days.

Does anyone else see a sugar-coated "screw you" at nature there?
