  • Photoshop printing problem?

Years ago Photoshop 7 printed pictures the same size as the image. I'm now using CS3 (I know it's old!) and it's printing things out roughly double the dimensions shown in the "Scaled Print Size" box - not only that, but it's also shoving the image towards a corner of the paper even when it's set to "center image". Is it me or my copy of CS3 that's gone crook?

In case it is relevant, I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

  • How useful are snow shoes?

I went up to the arctic region a while ago and wore insulated boots with a very deep tread. It was OK to walk around even though it was hard going in snow, but not once did I slip.

I am going back soon and have been thinking about buying snowshoes, though last time I don't remember seeing anybody using them (though not many people around, either!).. I always thought they were things like wide tennis rackets, which I could understand would work, but the ones advertised these days look like strap-on aluminum skeletons that don't look very much wider than the boots you'd strap them onto. Are they any good? Do they really work and stop you sinking into the snow? If you've used them I would really like to know what you thought of them.

  • How to change Dell boot order?

If you also happen to have a Dell Studio XPS (loaded with Win 7 OS) and have figured out how to change the boot order so that it will boot from a CD, please explain to me!

Starting up, F12 gives me "boot options" where I see that the CD drive is listed as #2 in the sequence, but everything I try hoping to persuade it to move up to #1 does absolutely nothing at all!

  • Recover hard disk data?

My desktop pc failed recently and I'm gambling on it being a motherboard failure.

Assuming that's right, can I just take the hard disk drive out of it and swap it with the hard disk drive in another (working) computer? If I do that, will this working computer just boot up from the newly-inserted disk? Anything I should watch for (other than not trying to swap my old ATA disk with a SATA drive)?

  • How can I best create a web page?

I have never done any web design before, but have been asked to do so for my local society. I had thought of trying out Coffee Cup's software on their 28-day trial offer. Have you used it? Can I try it without buying space on the web to build my pages on? And if I need web space, where do I rent it from? (this might be a silly question: I have half an idea that my broadband provider offers limited web space).

Or is there any other easy-for-a-beginner-to-use software that is not expensive that you would recommend instead? All we would want is a simple 3-page design with the odd photograph; some text, and links to email addresses, and generally make it attractive to look at.

  • Why do people say "Google it"?

It strikes me as odd that, on every Yahoo! Answers forum, people whose response is that the questioner should use a search engine, invariably say "Google it". Would it not be more likely that a Yahoo! user would say "Yahoo! it"?

Can anyone tell me whether the Campanile hotels in Hull and/or Doncaster have rooms with twin beds and, if so, whether you have to ask for twin beds when booking?

  • Where are e-mails stored on a computer?

My computer runs Windows XP, and I use Outlook Express for all my emails (which are then deleted from my ISP's servers). I want to make a copy of the files for these emails, but have not yet been able to track down the directory in which they are stored. Have you any suggestions where to look?

  • How do Americans justify routine circumcision?

If American Christians on the whole are as devoutly religious as they appear to be, why do they commonly perform circumcision on their male children? My understanding of the Bible is that God created everything and saw that it was good, and that the instructions and advice given by Jesus were that God should be honoured (he might also have mentioned something about obeying). How, therefore, do Christians justify their decision that God's creations are imperfect - a design fault - that entitles them to interfere with His intent? (I can see Biblical justification for surgical intervention in cases of medical necessity, but not in cases of ritual, when the action represents blasphemy).

I might ask the same of certain other religions, but I do not know enough about them to be able to ask a rational question.

  • How much are Kodak print heads and who sells them?

I am thinking of buying a Kodak 3250 printer to try out their claim to save me money on ink. However, I believe the cost of their ink cartridges is kept low by not incorporating a print head in them - so I'd need to factor in a figure for the cost of a replacement print head, but can't find any advertised - not even on Kodak's site - apart from on ebay in the USA, which is no use to me. If anyone in the UK - or elsewhere in Europe - has bought one, I would like to know how much to expect to pay, and whether they are readily available.

  • How does ebay best offer work?

I have negotiated an agreed price with an ebay seller under the "make an offer" facility he had available. This is recorded in ebay as a "best offer". What happens next? When do I tell PayPal to pay the seller? Can he go back on our agreement? (I have bought on ebay many times before, but never using an 'offer)'.

  • Can I speed up inkjet printing?

My HP Officejet started getting carriage jams 10 months into warranty. HP sent me a list of actions to remedy the jams, which worked - for a time. The jams became more frequent then, 3 months later, they started happening at every sheet, and when I went back to HP they said "It's out of warranty now - go to a repair agent". I pointed out it was the same in-warranty fault but they still refused to fix it.

I took the HP machine to a dump in disgust and bought a Canon instead. However, I had a lot of HP ink left which luckily fits my son's HP F2280 printer as well - so I've borrowed that to run a 500-page print job. The pages are only A5, but the 2280 is taking 35 seconds per sheet. Anybody got ideas to speed it up a bit?

  • What download rate for PS3 games internet usage?

If you're using PS3 to play games with a remote contact, what is the typical download rate? Is it roughly the same as for video downloads, or would it be more like the rate for, say, text files? (Trying to work out whether to pay for unlimited internet usage or settle for a cheaper service with a 12GB monthly download limit).

  • Are there any humans at PayPal?

I sold an item on ebay and although I got a message from ebay saying the buyer had paid; that Paypal was processing paymemt and that I could check its staus through my Paypal account, the account still shows nothing. The buy wants to collect the item tomorrow and of course can't until I know I've been paid. Emails to PayPal and Ebay have not yet been answered, and although I've called PayPal Customer Services (hah!) and tried every blasted option on their automated system, I still can't find a way of asking a person to check what's going on. Has anyone ever got through to anybody sensible?

  • Does reinstalling XP affect other programs?

One of my computers is behaving badly - ignoring commands; pretending that peripherals don't exist etc. I can't seem to isolate the cause, so I thought I would try reinstalling Windows XP from the recovery disk.

Just so that I'm forewarned - if I reinstall the operating system, is that likely to overwrite the registry entries made when other programs were installed?
