How does a horse trainer gets banned for naming a horse "grape soda" in new york ?

    Favourite answer:

While looking into this matter further, especially before answering, I found that Eric Guillot sole purpose for using this particular name was NOT at all innocent in nature. It was actually intentional. Definitely a wrong move!

    To elaborate further:

Eric Guillot reportedly chose the name "Grape Soda" because of a feud with a black TV announcer for TVG network, Ken Rudulph. Eric Guillot, a trainer of 30 years, tweeted on New Year’s Day a picture of the horse with the message: “This colt will run next week and has unique name in honour of a TVG analyst.” At the end of the tweet was a black fist emoji. The Jockey Club, who look after the registry of horses in the US, ordered the name be changed and banned him for running a horse with a ‘racist’ name.

However, in my opinion something like this should have never gotten this far in the first place. Then again, I believe some in the racing industry may not have known that particular name was a racist slur. The problem is Eric Guillot did, and apparently used it as such, which makes this and his behavior unacceptable! I feel The Jockey Club should also bare in responsibility as it's their job to stop this in its tracks so to speak. A lesson learned for all involved!

What's the term for a racehorse who tends to lag behind throughout the race but then surges ahead in the final stretches to win or place?

Looking for this bit of obscure vocabulary. I know it exists, but I've forgotten it. I know there's horse racing jargon for horses that perform this way, but I can't remember the term, like I remember a "mudder" is a racehorse with longer odds but who will finish strong or win if there's a sudden downpour or it's rained and the track is muddy.

I'd call my grandpa who used to take me to the racetrack with him, just me and him, when I was a girl, especially up to Hialeah Park, which was like high society and we'd go always wearing our Sunday best with hats and I loved looking out at the pink flamingos. I was his ticket to get to go down and inspect the horses, him saying his granddaughter really wanted to look at all the pretty horses, which I did, and they'd take one look at me and always let us through. Those were some of my favorite days as a girl, but he's not around anymore and I can't think of anyone else to ask.Do any people who go to the track know or remember the term used for horses who rather than start strong and stay ahead tend to start slow and bring up the rear or disappear into the group of middling horses for almost the entire race only to then come around the last bend, pour on steam, pass and pull out ahead of the middling bunch of horses, and catch up with or pass the lead horse for the win or at least go neck and neck and place, finishing strong several lengths ahead of the horses they'd been running with or running behind?

Why do jockeys stand up in the stirrups after crossing the finish line?

    Favourite answer:

Standing up tells the horse to slow down and that the race is over. It's also easier on the rider to slow the horse from a standing position, because it gives him more leverage. Every jockey, and all exercise riders do this. Even riders in non-racing sports, such as eventing, will do this from time to time. It doesn't hurt the horse, and it reduces the chance of an accident.

    2020 Triple Crown?

    Favourite answer:

I take nothing away from Tiz the Law, who won the shortened Belmont last Saturday. He's a fine colt, one of the best of this year's crop of 3 year olds, and he deserved to win. But unfortunately, his win there proved absolutely NOTHING. We already KNEW he could run a 9 furlong race- he did that when he won the Florida Derby in March. So he's never really been tested at a longer distance, and he won't be until he runs in the Travers at Saratoga in early August. At that race, he will finally get his chance to show the world if he's able to go 10 furlongs and win or not. They won't shorten the Travers the way they did the Belmont, because it's not part of the Triple Crown.

And personally, I think the way the Triple Crown has been handled this year is pretty dammed stupid. If the NYRA and the Jockey Club (neither of which are known for their ability to use common sense) had been smart, they would have kept the five week format intact and scheduled the Preakness for September 19 and the Belmont for October 10. That would have meant we'd have had an autumn Triple Crown instead of a spring one, which would have been just fine. They should have left the Belmont's distance ALONE, too, and not shortened it. Instead, however, they turned the Belmont into a Kentucky Derby PREP RACE. The race last Saturday didn't even have 2 TURNS in it, and all of these horses will have to face that later in the season. That was hardly fair to them. Now, even IF by some chance Tiz the Law does win the other two races, he will have to have a big fat asterisk by his name in the record books, because he won't have run a true Triple Crown series. That's unfortunate as well, because it will have a negative impact on the colt's future breeding career, even if he is successful at winning other races like the Dubai World Cup later on.

No, the TC could have been handled and executed far better than it was, even with the pandemic and economic crisis.
